An experiment with Google’s Blogger
As I mentioned in a previous post, I created a Travel photo blog using Google’s Blogger, primarily to understand it more so I can help readers, but I also wanted to see how quick I could rank the blog on the 1st page of Google for ‘travel photo blog’ and I’ve been amazed so far.
On Sunday, the 9th I created the blog, and linked to it from my travel blog, and Google cached it on the 10th and you can find it in Google on the 11th, that’s just 48 hours after linking to the blog, which is much quicker than I expected.
Now, it’ll be interesting to see how quickly it’ll take to jump on to the 1st page, and I wanted to let you know what I have done on the blog to optimise it for the search engines:
Keywords:
I have used the keywords ‘travel’ ‘photo’ and ‘blog’ within the content and the title tag. What is going to make this tough is that there’s very little content, other than a description of the photograph and labels which you can add within Blogger.
Links:
I’ve added a good link straight away, on a blog which gets visited a lot by the Googlebot. If you don’t have a website or blog you can link to then I would suggest that you visit a forum, like WebTalkForums, and participate, include a link in your signature, and you’ll soon see Google include your blog within its database.
Domain & Blog Title:
I’ve used the keyword term in the username and blog title because from experience Google seems to give good weight to those sites with the keyword term in the domain name. Also the blog title is included on the blog page, in a h2 tag which is supposed to give the keyword more weight.
Observations:
Will a Blogger blog get stuck in the sandbox filter?
You would assume because it’s a Blogspot.com domain and it is established, that this wouldn’t be a problem, and I’d start to rank in Google, and the other search engines pretty quickly, but I have a sneaky feeling that this won’t be the case.
Will the blog rank better in Google.com rather than Google.co.uk?
I guess because the blog is hosted in the US, that the blog will rank better in .com than .co.uk so it’ll be interesting seeing the different results.
