Search Engine Optimisation - Part 2
Without traffic you earn no income from the likes of Google Adsense, and without a good Google Page Rank, people don’t want to pay you for advertising on your blog. So, the best solution is to continue to write unique content and hopefully people will link to you.
This certainly works for my travel blog, but for Blogged Out, getting people to link to content is like drawing blood out of a stone. The only other route is to ask people to link to your blog and in return you’ll link to them – which is not ideal because Google in particular have ‘dampened’ down the weight that reciprocal link exchanges carry.
The search engines see links as a type of score of how popular your blog is, and will give more weight to links that come from authority sites like the BBC, and established domain names. One-way links are what you should be aiming for.
To get people to link to you write blog posts like ‘my 5 favourite movies’ or something along these lines but within your niche. People like these types of posts, and it also generates discussion. To get people interested you could submit it to Digg, Stumbled Upon and Netscape.
Personally, I think article submission [other than above] is a waste of time and effort – you submit one article to hundreds of article sites, and Google will just see this as duplicate content, and the link from your article to your blog will carry very little weight in the search engines. Getting links to your blog is vital, but it can be a very frustrating and time consuming exercise, so be patient.
