My First Search Engine Optimisation Experience

My First Search Engine Optimisation ExperienceFor the past five years, I’ve worked on improving my knowledge of ‘search engine optimisation’ and I remember in 2002, visiting various forums and thinking what the hell are these people talking about.

I instantly thought that getting my website high in the search engines wasn’t going to be something that I can do, and I went out and found a company [who shall remain nameless] to take on the job of improving my website traffic.

Six months later, and nearly a thousand pound down the drain, I realised that employing a search engine company wasn’t working for me, and dumped them, went to Amazon and ordered a few books.

Another six months later, I could really see the benefit of reading these books, and because I understood the jargon, I could ask questions in forums, and this is when I really saw the benefit. The problem nowadays is 1) the huge amount of competition and 2) the search engines are a tougher nut to crack.

I don’t want to jump in feet first and start writing about how the search engines work, so I’d like to get some feel on the type of experience my readers have with the search engines. So, let me know via comments or via email the type of experience you have had, where you are struggling and we’ll take it from there.

  1. I’m sad (and a bit angry) that some SEO (fake-)specialists do bad at SEO. It doesn’t help those (hello!) who really helps people by bringing results.

  2. Mathieu,

Is SEO a service you offer?

This “ahem” seo company, created doorway pages, and got them listed on the search engines, in the hope it would generate traffic.

They did NOTHING to actually search engine optimise my actual website. Something else worth adding is that they GUARANTEED 1st page rankings, never choose a company who can guarantee because the search engines are in control and not SEO companies.

  3. Absolutely Darren, we even have a Google Adwords Professionnal.

Here is an interesting article giving interesting hints to help you not to choose this or this SEO company.

  4. Mathieu, Im heading to Latvia next week, but when I get back I’ll be in touch. I am actually looking for an SEO person / company to take away some of my workload.

  6. SEO is somewhat baffling. Its importance is obvious, but getting there is trying with all of the information (and sometimes misinformation) out there. Since you asked what knowledge your readers have, I will say I have a basic understanding, definitely not an expert myself. I am mainly aware of the notion of structuring your content in a way that people will search it. For instance, don’t use “vehicles,” if your audience will be searching for “cars.”

That being said, fire away, Darren!
