Wow, it’s been sometime since I posted a blog entry here – apologies. I’ve been busy working, and increasing content on my primary blog, that has jumped to a PR6, which I am delighted about because I have put a lot of time and effort into it.
One thing I have learnt being a webmaster is not to put all of your “eggs in one basket†and it amazes me how many webmasters I speak to who concentrate on ranking their site well in Google. Of course Google brings in the majority of your website’s traffic, but what if Google were to disappear tomorrow, would your business disappear too?
For most people I reckon it would, and that’s why it is important that you build your business brand and promote the site on sites where your customers “hang-out†or advertise in local and national newspapers or magazines.
Building a business brand sounds expensive, but it doesn’t have to be if you market your business on the right sites, newspapers and magazines. Networking is a great way to build business brand, and I’ll give you some examples of networking soon, that have worked for me.

I learnt this lesson the hard way. On New Years Eve I lost all Google referrals which resulted in my traffic being down 60% and revenue 90% (Google traffic converts better). The Google traffic is coming back again now but it has taught me to diversify more, with both different sites and traffic sources.
Ouch! Nice timing aswell huh?! Yep, I learnt the hard way in 2003, when my main business site crashed out of Google for 3 months.
It wasn’t a nice time!
